Couples are quickly becoming a favorite “subject” to photograph, and susprise proposals are SO fun! This is the 3rd proposal I’ve had the honor to photograph!
Anthony contacted me at the end of April. He planned to propose to his girlfriend at the end of the Eugene Half-Marathon on May 7. When I spoke to him on the phone a few days before the race he told me how Ashley is a runner and had been wanting him to run a race with her since they’d started dating. He was finally going to do a race, and felt that proposing at the end was perfect because it would show how he had persued her, and worked hard for her. I wish I could remember his exact words, because it was so sweet!
The race was Sunday morning and began at 7 am. I got up much earlier than I’m accustomed to, and headed to Eugene. I was able to be at the starting line when the race began. There were SO many runners, and I was very impressed with all of them for running such long distances (it was both a half and full marathon)!
I had emailed earlier in the week and been in touch with the director of the race. He had said it could be arranged for me to be at the finish line so that I could easily capture the big moment. I hadn’t been able to get in touch with him again to arrange to meet, but was able to find some others who helped me and gave me a badge so I could be where I needed to be. I was able to be at the finish line with plenty of time to spare.
Anthony’s parents and brother, along with Ashley’s mom and grandma were also there to witness the big moment. Ashley had no idea that they had traveled from California to be there. Anthony’s brother was my contact person for the morning, and he along with the rest of the family arrived shortly after I set up at the finish line.
Proposals are pretty intense to photograph. Along with weddings, the moment really can’t be re-created. And I think that’s even more the case for proposals, since you really can’t re-create that moment of shock when she first realizes what is happening. As runners began finishing the race, my heart started pounding. I was worried I would miss them, or that someone would block my view, or any number of other things.
Anthony called his brother as they neared the finish line so we would know to watch for them. Very soon we could see them coming and I was able to capture them crossing the finish line.
Very soon after they crossed the line, I saw Anthony signal to Ashely to wait for a minute, and start getting into a pouch at his waist. I knew this was the moment! I am so glad I was able to capture Ashley’s surprise and excitement as Anthony proposed to her.
After Anthony proposed, their family called out to Ashley so she’d see they were there. They were all so excited and happy!
Anthony had asked that I meet them at King Estate Winery outside Eugene around lunch time to get a few more photos after they’d had a chance to clean up. What a gorgeous drive up to the winery!
It was great to be able to capture some photos of Anthony, Ashely, and their family.
Anthony and Ashley first met at a concert with mutual friends, and Anthony had scooped her up and put her on his shoulders.
Congratulations, again, Anthony and Ashley! Thanks for letting me be a part of your special day!
